Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany (1855-1884) photographed in 1872. Leopold was the fourth son and eighth child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The most academic of the Queen's sons, he was also a haemophiliac, meaning that Victoria was keen to keep him at home as her assistant. In 1872, he went to Oxford, despite the Queen's protestations where he befriended some of the finest minds in the country, including Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll). Leopold became increasingly active in public life, supportinig a wide range of social, medical and artistic causes. He happily married Princess Helena of Waldeck-Pyrmont in 1881 but died in 1884 after a fall, while recuperating in Cannes.
