Engraving showing the arrest of Charles Bradlaugh MP (1833-1891) in the House of Commons in 1880. Bradlaugh was a social reformer, elected as MP for Northampton in 1880, who refused to take the Commons oath as he was an unbeliever. As such, he was ejected from the Commons and was unable to take his seat in Parliament. In 1886 he relented and took the oath and his seat.
