Buxom, matronly singer hitting a high note in the Albert Hall. Her voice is so loud (or bad?!) that chairs have fallen over and the audience can be seen disappearing through the exit doors. Bateman (1887-1970) was a popular artist and regularly contributed to the Sketch, the Tatler and the Bystander. His efficient, bold style depicting social faux-pas was ground breaking for its time and his work is a brilliant reflection of the period.
