Engraving showing Dr. Howard, Medical Officer of New York Harbour, demonstrating his resusciation technique at the Receiving House of the Royal Humane Society, Hyde Park, London 1878. The technique came in two parts; at top left of the image - pumping fluid from the lungs and stomach; and in the main image - compression of the chest, similar in method to working a bellows. Dr. Howard's technique was so revolutionary and successful that he was awarded the national prize of the American Medical Association.
