Engraving by W. Bazzett Murray showing Gramme's direct-current dynamo. Zenobe Theophile Gramme (1826-1901) built the first successful dynamo in 1869, incorporating a ring-wound armature ('Gramme ring'), which after various improvements, he manufactured in 1871. It was the first electric generator to be used commercially, for electroplating as well as electric lighting.
