Professor William Ayrton and Professor John Perry, electrical engineers. Ayrton held the post of Professor of Natural Philosophy and Telegraphy at the Imperial College of Engineering, Japan, later becoming a Fellow of the Royal Society and holding several teaching posts, with a reputation for excellent, practical-based teaching. Together with Perry, he invented many electrical measuring instruments, including a spiral-spring ammeter and wattmeter. They also developed an electrical railway and invented the first electrical tricycle in 1882.
