Qanat, Iran. Underground water channel in desert, Iran. Water is carried by gravity from a source in a mountain range to irrigate crops and villages at lower elevations. The tunnels are dug by hand, and narrow wells are dug down to it at regular intervals for ventialtion and to dispose of the excavated material. Iran is thought to have 50,000 qanats.
