Lesser Flamingoes - breed in sight of the city (Phoeniconaias minor ). Kimberley, South Africa. An artificial s-shaped dam was constructed in 2006 to encourage visiting Flamingos to breed. It was a success when in 2007/2008 nearly 2,000 pairs bred on the island raising 9,000 chicks. Currently the site is suffering increasing pollution from adjoining industrial developments and causing local concern for the plight of this, the only flamingo breeding site in South Africa.
