England - Aerial view, Castlerigg Stone Circle, . Lake District National Park, Cumbria. UK. Some 5,000 years ago, Castlerigg Stone Circle, was built of 38 boulders. The position and alignment of each stone was calculated to match the seasonal movements of the sun, moon and certain stars. This is however a true circle, since the north-eastern side is flattened. Just inside the eastern end of the circle is a group of 10 stones that form a rectangular enclosure or cove. Excavations were undertaken in 1882 and 1875.
