'Chapel Royal, Whitehall, Exterior', (1881). The Banqueting House, designed by Inigo Jones and completed in 1622, was significant in English architecture as the first structure in the neo-classical style. It was converted to a chapel to replace the Chapel Royal of Whitehall, which had been destroyed in a fire in 1698. The Palace of Whitehall at Westminster, then a village outside London, was the main residence of the English monarchs from 1530 until 1698.
