'Aldersgate', 1670, (c1872). One of the gates around the Roman walled town of Londinium, (City of London). The old gate was rebuilt in 1617 with an equestrian statue of King Charles I, and damaged in the Great Fire of London in 1666. It was repaired, and remained until 1761 when it began to restrict the increased traffic in and out of the city.
