Photographed with a special deep sky filter to reveal the nebulosity above the the ALMA telescopes. The Milky Way, the Southern Cross, the dark coalsack nebula, and the red-shining Carina Nebula are at right. The Small Magellanic Cloud appears at left. ALMA (Atacama Large Millimetre/sub-millimetre Array) is an array of 66 radio antennas located at an elevation of 5000 metres on the arid Chajnantor plateau in the Chilean Andes. Data from the separate antennas is combined by interferometry, making it one of the most powerful telescopes in the world.
