Mars is seen here on 23 March 2012 at 04:42 UT showing an unusual terminator projection, discovered by Wayne Jaeschke on 20 March. The projection may be a high altitude or mesospheric clouds at an altitude of 40-80 kilometers illuminated by the Sun, making it look detached from the planet because the area under it is still in shadow on the terminator. JPL and NASA scientists are looking at data from the Mars Odyssey Orbiter's Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS) and Mars Color Imager (MARCI) imaging systems to see if they can shed more light on the projection. Olympus Mons, the tallest volcao in the solar system, can be seen just to the left of the center of the disk of Mars, surrounded by orographic clouds. Other clouds are visible to the left over Tharsis. The north polar cap is at the bottom with a dark Lowell band next to it.
