Whirlpool Galaxy. The Whirlpool galaxy or M51, is a face-on spiral galaxy. The spiral arms and dust clouds of M51 are the birth sites of massive and luminous stars. M51 is effected by the gravitational pull of a nearby companion galaxy, NGC 5195 (seen at top). The companion's pull is causing turbulence in M51's gas and dust clouds that triggers star formation.
