Map of Mars, plate 1. Original caption: General map of the average state of the changing surface of Mars, showing the mean forms and tones of the various regions up to1929. Eug癡ne Michel Antoniadi (March 1, 1870 - February 10, 1944) was a Greek astronomer who spent most of his life in France when invited there by Camille Flammarion. He became a highly reputed observer of Mars. He also observed Venus and Mercury. He made the first attempts to draw a map of Mercury, but his maps were flawed by his incorrect assumption that Mercury had synchronous rotation with the Sun. The first standard nomenclature for Martian albedo features was introduced by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) when they adopted 128 names from the 1929 map of Antoniadi named La Plan癡te Mars (The Planet Mars). He died in 1944 at the age of 74.
