Van den Berg 142 is a small 1 arc minute patch of reflection nebulae inside of the very large area of emission nebulosity IC 1396 in Cepheus. It is visible near the bottom center of the frame here. An 8.8 magnitude star appears to be involved in VDB 142, and it lies in a complex of emission and dark nebulae. B161, a dark nebula 13 x 3 arc minutes is visible in the left center of the frame. This frame is approximately the upper right quadrant of the entire IC 1396 complex.
