Astronaut James Adamson takes photographs of the Earth through an overhead window on Shuttle Atlantis. This photograph was taken by a fellow member of the STS-43 crew, (08/02/91-08/11/91). For most of its flight, the Shuttle orbits with its "back," pointing towards Earth. The overhead windows provide an ideal position for a variety of Earth observation photography. In addition to the Hasselblad camera seen here, the crews regularly carried Nikon 35mm and Aero Linhof 5-inch format cameras on missions. Shuttle-based imagery is often use to complement satellite-gathered data. The primary task of this mission was to deploy NASA's TDRS-E data relay satellite.
