Astronaut Donald Thomas making observations of one of the Japanese Red-Bellied Newts carried in the second International Microgravity Laboratory, (IML-2). The newts were used to study the effect of microgravity on their development during the two-week mission. The newts, along with two species of fish, were housed in the Aquatic Animal Experiment Unit, (AAEU) inside IML-2. The laboratory was carried in the payload bay on Shuttle Columbia during the mission, which lasted fromthe 8th of July to the 23rd of July 1994.
