Test for iron(III). Iron(III) hydroxide (Fe(OH)3) precipitate (rusty-red) is formed by adding 2.9M solution of ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH) to 0.25 M solution of iron(III) chloride (FeCl3). The reaction is FeCl3 + NH4OH -> Fe(OH)3 + NH4Cl. This is an example of a double replacement reaction. This reaction had been used in the classic qualitative inorganic analysis as a test for Fe3+ cations.
