Ammonia dissolves copper sulfide. Dark-green solid copper sulfide (CuS) in a test tube dissolves in a 5.8M solution of ammonia (NH4OH). The resulting solution has an intense blue color due to formation of tetraamminecopper(II) complex ion ([(Cu(NH3)4]2+). The reaction can be written as CuS + NH4OH -> (Cu(NH3)4)S + H2O.
