Lithium carbonate reacts with hydrochloric acid. This series demonstrates addition of solid lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) to a beaker containing 0.5 M hydrochloric acid. In the reaction, HCl + Li2CO3 -> LiCl + CO2 + H2O, bubbles of carbon dioxide gas are produced. This is an example of a carbonate-acid reaction, which in itself is a double-replacement reaction followed by a decomposition reaction.
