Litmus changes its color depending on the pH of the solution. Here, litmus paper strips were placed in test tubes with different solutions to compare their pH. At left, litmus in vinegar turned red indicating an acidic solution. In center, litmus in distilled water remained unchanged indicating a neutral solution. At right, litmus in a baking soda solution turned blue indicating an alkaline.
