Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), the predominant form of HIV, causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). It is transmitted through the transfer of blood, semen, vaginal fluid, pre-ejaculate, or breast milk and infects T-4 white blood cells, compromising the immune response. Many people experience flu-like symptoms within the first month or two of infection.
