Coaxial cable is used for transmission of high-frequency (broadband) electrical signals. Shown here is a stripped coaxial cable revealing its internal structure. The innermost conducting wire is insulated from the cylindrical conducting sheath by the non-conducting spacer (typically made of polyethylene). The whole cable is usually covered by an insulating jacket. Such a construction allows for confining of the electromagnetic signal inside the cable, between the inner and the outer conductors, and therefore makes the cable immune to RF electromagnetic interference. The most common household use of coaxial cables is to bring the cable service to the home TV set. Coaxial cables are also used extensively in industrial radio-frequency applications.
