USDA chemist Harold Griffin extracts an enzyme from a bacterium found in shipworms (Teredinidae) that is a powerful new stain remover for laundry detergents. Shipworms are vermiform bivalves that burrow into wood. Enzymes are used in laundry detergents to help break down organic-based stains.
