Sandia researcher Susan Altman conducts research to minimize biofouling on reverse osmosis membranes used for desalination in her laboratory. Desalination is the removal of salt or other chemicals from ocean water or brackish water supplies. Desalinization can be achieved by means of evaporation, freezing, reverse osmosis, ion exchange, and electrodialysis.
