The most turbid, plankton-rich part of the Gulf of Mexico appears red in this SeaWiFS (Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor) satellite image. Huge numbers of phytoplankton feed on nutrients carried by rivers. When they die, decomposition of all this organic matter causes oxygen-depleted waters and one of the world's largest "dead zones".
