Edge-emitting high power diode (semiconductor) lasers have a wide variety of applications including optical storage, telecommunications, medical, and others. Diode lasers have a dominant market share among all lasers produced. They account for 56% of laser market revenue (2006 data). Edge-emitting high power diode lasers produce up to several Watts of optical power. Pictured here is a single-stripe diode laser mounted inside of very basic TO-220 package.
