Reverse osmosis trains at the Irvine Desalter Project, Irvine Ranch Water District, Irvine, California, USA. Two reverse osmosis trains are used to separate the salt from water. A total of 434 reverse osmosis membrane elements are inside the 62 pressure vessels. Two pumps are used to pressurize water for the membrane separation process. The Irvine Desalter Project produces drinking (potable) water by purifying ground waters from the Orange County basin. Due to natural geology in the area, groundwaters beneath Irvine have high salt concentration, so it is treated using reverse osmosis, decarbonation and disinfection. The facility supplies enough potable (drinking) water for about 50,000 people.
