A photodiode is a semiconductor diode whose junction is exposed to light. When a photon is absorbed in the junction region, electron-hole pair is created and photocurrent is produced. The value of photocurrent is proportional to the number of photons absorbed. Thus measuring photocurrent produced in a photodiode can be used to determine light intensity. Shown here is a silicon photodiode mounted on a printed circuit board. The assembly is part of the amplified silicon detector manufactured by Thorlabs (model PDA55). Aug 2007.
