Newly-synthesized proteins in the cell, folding into their correct shapes in order to function properly. The enzyme UDP-glucose glycosyltransferase (UGGT) monitors folding in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) of the cell. In this illustration, a UGGT enzyme (purple) checks new proteins (blue, upper left) for proper conformation, by examining specific indicator molecules (green, pink) attached to the proteins. Correctly-folded proteins are approved (right), while misfolded proteins (bottom) are degraded and their components are recycled.
