Volvox algae. Light micrograph of a colony of Volvox aureus, a green algae, containing asexual daughter colonies. Volvox lies between the plant and animal kingdoms, sometimes being classified as a flagellate animal. The colony contains from hundreds to thousands of cells arranged at the surface of a watery matrix. The individual cells have two flagella and eyespots. They reproduce both asexually & sexually. In the former case, cells in the rear of the colony divide to form daughter colonies. Once released the parent colony dies. In the latter case male & female gametes are produced & a sexual union occurs. Magnification: x50 at 35mm size.
