Ribozymes (RNA enzymes) can be used as molecular sensors to detect the presence of specific chemicals, even in extremely low concentrations. In this illustration, a modified ribozyme is tethered on a gold-coated silicon chip. The presence of a specific target molecule will cause the ribozyme to self splice, signaling the target's presence by releasing itself from its tether.
