The castor bean plant (Ricinus communis) grows about 6-15 feet in areas with mild, frost-free winters. Its seeds or beans are very poisonous and are the basis castor oil, a laxative. They are also used in lubricants, soaps, varnishes, and in jewelry. Symptoms of poisoning from castor plants or Ricin range from diarrhea to shock and can be fatal.
