Fresnel lighthouse lens, a 100-year-old, 3rd order lens in use every night in Dunkirk, NY. Invented by French physicist Augustin-Jean Fresnel, the lens is much thinner than a conventional lens, which allows for a large aperture and short focal length at a lower weight.
