Gramma grass cactus, Toumeya papyracantha (Sclerocactus papyracanthus). This small and well camouflaged cactus is generally associated with tufts of blue gramma grass (Bouteloua gracilis). Its papery spines resemble the dried leaves of this plant. The pink color of upper spines indicates that they are growing. They will turn grey when fully formed. Its actual taxonomic placement is still a matter of dispute. Inhabits gramma grass regions from AZ east to TX Panhandle. Photo Socorros Co., NM
