The Lanphere Dunes of northern California, near Arcata, with sand dunes covering a coastal forest which once occupied the same area. These moving sand dunes are slowly advancing by wind action over the coastal forest visible in the left of the composite photograph. This biologically diverse habitat is now preserved as the Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge. May 2008
