Eastern Skunk Cabbage, Symplocarpus foetidus, emerging in springtime, northern New Jersey. A characteristic wetland plant, skunk cabbage has the adaptation of thermogenesis; it produces heat from excess cellular respiration in order to melt snow and ice allowing it to grow and flower early in the spring.
