Fruit of the Amazonian floodplain tree, Leonia glycicarpa. While rarely eaten by people this pulp surrounding the large seed is devoured by several species of herbivorous fish, such as pacus. Native names for this tree are tamara and nina caspi. Leonia is a member of the violet family (Violaceae), a fact that surprises many people only familiar with the herbaceous members of this family. Photographed along the Rio Napo, Peru.
