"Tane Mahuta," New Zealand's largest kauri tree (Agathis australis), in Waipoua Forest. The tree, whose name means "God of the Forest" in Maori, is over 1200 years old, 51 meters tall, and has a girth of almost 14 meters. Once common in Australia and widespread in New Zealand, kauri forests were decimated by loggers and gum diggers in the early 20th century. Kauri forests are now confined to the northern part of the North Island.
