Just four kilometers off the mainland and 30 kilometers from Auckland, Tiritiri Matangi island is the focus of New Zealand efforts to reintroduce rare and endangered endemic birds such as the takahe, kokako, saddleback and stitchbird. Large numbers of native trees and shrubs have been planted and the island cleared of predators such as rats, mice and stoats.
