The dark fruit and reddish barkof the Buckthorn (Rhamnus spp.) are potentially toxic when fresh, containing purgative anthracene glycosides that act on the large intestine. Heating and/or storage changes these substances into nontoxic anthraquinones (frangulin) wich have laxative properties.
