A form of the highly variable Opuntia polyacantha. The species is in taxonomic flux. This form is close to variety erinacea, the Porcupine Prickly Pear. The species is widespread from the plains states to west of the Rocky Mountains into the Mojave Desert. Spines can be long or short and flowers vary from yellow to deep rose-magenta.
