On May 31, 2004, lava from Kilauea Volcano made it to the ocean for the first time in about a year. Here an advancing toe of 1,500 degree Farenhight lava slips toward the sea over black, ropy pahooehoe lava that had been recently cooled by ocean waves flowing over it. Steam rises whenever water touches the hot rock. This flow was known as the Banana Flow.
