Tropical lowland rainforest in the Daintree region, part of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area in northern Queensland, Australia. Mists, rain and warm temperatures promote dense growth which in turn provides nutrients for further growth. Widespread clearing of rainforests breaks this nutrient cycle and often leads to depauperate soils, leached of nutrients by heavy rain after the humus and stabilizing roots have been removed.
