This is a transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of an erythrocyte (red blood cell) which contains a trophozoite. The cytostome is the point at which erythrocyte cytoplasm containing hemoglobin is taken in to form a food vacuole in the parasite. This can be seen at the right lower edge of the middle lobe of the parasite. Trophozoites in erythrocytes often adopt remarkably lobed forms. To the left of the bottom lobe, we see three sections through one or more mitochondria.
