Color enhanced scanning electron micrograph of the evaporation disk of a damsel bug (family Nabidae), magnified 4000x at 8" x 10". The evaporation disk is a mass of channels and pads designed to quickly evaporate chemical attractants or repellants which exude from a nearby gland between the hind legs. Evaporation disks are also found on plant bugs (Muridae) and shield bugs (Pentatomidae).
