Rhodospirillum rubrum, a gram-negative, purple nonsulfur proteobacterium, live in mud and stagnant water and help to fix atmospheric nitrogen. R. rubrum is used in sewage treatment processes, biomass production, fertilizer, animal food, and molecular hydrogen production.
