Tetrahymena thermophila is a freshwater ciliate approximately 50 micrometers in length and covered with 700-800 cilia. This colorized scanning electron micrograph (SEM) shows a typical Tetrahymena cell from the SB255 cell line magnified 2000 times. Tetrahymena is a useful model organism for studying a variety of human ciliary diseases known collectively as ciliopathies.
