These cancer (multiple myeloma) cells, unstained, filtered or manipulated, demonstrate their typical thickness and a remarkable tendency to bind together. Multiple myeloma (cancer that attacks bone and bone marrow) is a ghastly disease. Until recently the period from diagnosis to death was six months or less. Myeloma cells are 'rogue' antibody cells. In the body they produce proteins in vast amounts that literally 'gum' up the organs such as kidneys and they destroy bones in the body leaving 'holes'. With current progress, supported by autologous progenitor cell transplant, patients are surviving fifteen or more years with good quality of life, and a cure is in sight.
